Three students from the Faculty of Biotechnology and Food Sciences have been selected to participate in the prestigious BioLAB 2025–26 program, which offers a year-long internship at renowned research laboratories in the United States. Lodz University of Technology is the only technical university in Poland with representatives in this year’s edition of the program.

The BioLAB program is aimed at master’s and doctoral students in biological, chemical, and medical fields. Participants join research teams working on advanced scientific projects in areas such as neurology, crystallography, virology, and molecular genetics.

TUL scholarship holders

  • Mateusz Woźniak, a second-cycle student in biotechnology, will complete his internship at the University of Virginia. His research project focuses on the mechanisms of compound transport across the cell membrane of Gram-negative bacteria. He will study BtuB proteins that transport vitamin B12 and their interactions with the TonB system using EPR spectroscopy.

“The mechanism and conformational changes accompanying the transfer in both proteins (BtuB and TonB) are not fully understood. We will use spin labeling and EPR spectroscopy to describe these changes in vivo,” explains the student.

Milena Bors, a graduate in food technology and human nutrition, and Małgorzata Zora, a second-cycle student in biotechnology, will go to the University of Chicago.

  • Milena Bors will join Prof. Joseph Piccirilli’s team, which researches the structure and function of non-coding RNAs and their interactions with proteins and antibodies. “I want to better understand how these interactions influence the development of autoimmune diseases and cancer,” she says.

  • Małgorzata Zora, a second-cycle student in biotechnology, will begin research in Dr. Mohammed Kaplan’s laboratory, which studies predatory bacteria as an alternative to antibiotics. The main subject will be Venatorbacter cucullus, capable of attacking other bacteria, including dangerous human pathogens from the Campylobacter genus. The research will use cryo-electron microscopy.

The fact that three students from the Faculty of Biotechnology and Food Sciences are among the 34 selected nationwide is a source of pride. Lodz University of Technology not only educates specialists in engineering and technical sciences, but is also increasingly active in biotechnology and life sciences, as confirmed by the international successes of its students.

This year’s edition of the BioLAB program received 75 applications. Participation in the program is not only an opportunity for scientific development but also a cultural experience—participants actively engage in academic life at American universities, take part in seminars, guest lectures, and integrate with the international community
